Is my condition suitable for an online consult?14 Aug 2024

Telehealth is transforming the healthcare landscape, and now offers a convenient and accessible way for patients to access medical care. But with this online approach comes the need to understand which ailments are suitable to be seen virtually. Here's a guide to help you determine whether your health concern is appropriate for a video consult with one of our doctors.

Is it life or limb threatening?

If yes, then go to the nearest hospital emergency department immediately (dial 111 for an ambulance if necessary). While our online doctors are all experts in emergency medicine, a severe illness or injury may require physical examination and hands-on care. Please seek in-person care if you experience severe pain, difficulty breathing, major injury, or quickly deteriorating health status.

Mild to moderate acute illnesses

Emergency Consult is most suited for medical conditions that require urgent care – but aren’t life or limb threatening. Common illnesses such as colds, flu, or mild infections are suitable for telehealth consultations. Symptoms like cough, sore throat, or minor rashes can be evaluated through video calls. The doctor will assess your condition, recommend treatments and prescribe medication if needed.

Can it be seen on-screen?

Because our telehealth system utilises two-way video calling (some others are just audio or one-way video) many skin issues can be successfully assessed. Conditions like insect bites/stings, eczema, conjunctivitis (pink eye), impetigo (school sores), and rashes can often be diagnosed remotely based on the visual evidence - and you’ll be provided with scripts or referrals as required.

Note: Some things that can't be seen online (such as ear infections and UTIs) can also be successfully treated via telehealth.

Need help with medication management?

If you need guidance on managing medications—whether for adjusting dosages or addressing side effects—telehealth is a great option. Your best contact for ongoing care is your GP or family doctor – but we’re a good plan B for those times when they’re not available.

Treatment plans for minor injuries

For injuries that are not severe, such as minor sprains, strains, or bruises, a telehealth visit can be useful. Our online doctor will evaluate the extent of the injury and advise you on your treatment options and order further investigations, such as x-rays, if they’re needed.

If you’re just not sure?

Our doctors are Emergency Medicine Specialists who are adept at seeing the whole spectrum of illnesses and injuries. They’ll guide you towards recovery or further care as required. Emergency Consult is available all day and night, every day of the year, to anyone in New Zealand.
