Dr Blackburn completed medical school at the University of Utah before undertaking her Emergency Medicine residency at Albany Medical Center in New York, where she went on to join the staff as an academic emergency physician. She has travelled and worked in diverse rural locations including Montana, Invercargill, and Haiti. In 2018, Dr Blackburn moved with her family to New Zealand and spent seven years at Whakatāne Hospital, where she was Head of Department. She has since returned to the United States, where she works in a small hospital in Vermont while continuing to care for New Zealanders via telehealth.
Her professional interests include academic emergency medicine, trauma, forensics, and international emergency medicine. Before training in medicine, Dr Blackburn was a classical cellist, performing with several orchestras, including the NZ Doctors’ Orchestra and the Bay of Plenty Symphonia. This busy doctor and musician is also a mum to six children and enjoys hot air ballooning with her husband.
