Dr Shadwell completed her undergraduate medical degree at Otago University and then completed specialist training in Emergency Medicine in the Waikato. After becoming a Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM), she worked in Alice Springs and Darwin for several years before returning to Southland, where she has worked for the last 12 years. Dr Shadwell is the current Director for Emergency Medicine Training at Southland Hospital. A few years ago, she was elected to the Court of Examiners at the ACEM – a role that involves setting specialist emergency medicine exams and examining candidates. Dr Shadwell is also the ACEM liaison to the Cook Islands – a role that involves regular trips to the Cook Islands to provide supervision and training in emergency medicine. Dr Shadwell is committed to continuing her post graduate education in her chosen speciality of emergency medicine. Outside of medicine she enjoys running, snow sports, reading and crafts. She is also involved with Girl Guiding NZ as a brownie leader.
